Non-profit organizations will now have a new place to call home.

USD 501 board members approved a measure allowing the Community Resources Council to open Avondale East Community Empowerment And Transformation Center.

It would house several non-profit organizations in the old Avondale East Elementary School

The Community Resources Council Promotes Community Action in Topeka and Shawnee County.

It provides advocacy, research and education services for the community.

The next step for the project will be to present the plan to the Topeka Planning Board For Zoning Changes.

The board also announced the district is selling 17 acres of land to Midwest Partners that will be used to build a Walmart Supercenter near Highland Park High School

Board members also honored its 2013 Friends Of Education winners tonight.

This year’s winners include school volunteer winner Virgil Miller, Compeer, which provided mentors for Meadows Elementary students and Westar, which was awarded as an activity partner with 501.
