Officials: Attacks across Afghanistan kill 19

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Afghan officials say the latest attacks across the country have killed at least 19 people, including police officers and health care workers.

Wednesday’s attacks reflect an uptick in violence as spring fighting gets underway.

Muhiudin Noori, spokesman for the governor of western Herat province, says seven women and children died when the truck they were in hit a roadside bomb near the town of Shindad.

In eastern Laghman, provincial spokesman Sarhadi Zawak says insurgents attacked a checkpoint, killing four village policemen.

In northern Jawzjan, provincial chief police Aziz Ghayrat says insurgents opened fire on elders in a village and two health workers were killed in the crossfire.

His spokesman Adbdul Mannan Raoufi says six men were shot and killed in another part of Jawzjan. He had no further details.
