SW 17th Street project begins today

SW 17th between SW Washburn Ave. and MacVicar Ave. will close today for reconstruction.

The project will remove and replace the concrete curbs and gutters, sidewalks, sidewalk ramps, the concrete pavement, pavement patching, and asphalt overlay.  It will also repair storm sewers.  The first phase of the project will stretch from Washburn to College, everything else will remain open.  The second phase of the project will go from College to MacVicar, with everything else reopened.  Local traffic only, please, no through traffic.  Phasing also gives Washburn University access to Morgan Hall throughout the project.

Motorists can follow the primary posted SW 21st Street detour, or they can access the posted detour for College Hill businesses via SW 15th Street.

The total estimated construction cost is $2.5 million.  The project will be paid for through the city-wide half cent sales tax.  It is being done in conjunction with planned building expansion at Washburn University.

The City held a public meeting for neighborhood residents, businesses and citizens on April 18th at White Concert Hall.  Updates about the project can be found at www.topeka.org under the penny icon.

This stretch of roadway is scheduled to be closed to through traffic through November 29th.
