A construction mishap caused an evacuation this morning near Washburn University.

Just after 10 this morning a construction crew apparently broke a two inch gas line while tearing up a street north of the university.

Two businesses, including P T’s Coffee Shop and an apartment complex on the northwest corner of 17th and Washburn Ave. were evacuated while firefighters checked levels of gas fumes in the buildings.

Topeka Fire Department Battalion Chief Eric Bauer says there were no dangerous levels of gas fumes to be found and the evacuees were all allowed to return a short time later.  Only about dozen or so people had to be evacuated.

Kansas Gas Service workers were on the scene to make repairs and restore service.

The gas line break occurred on a stretch of SW 17th street that is being rebuilt from Washburn Ave. to MacVicar Ave.
