Shawnee County Commissioners voted to not move forward with a plan that would have connected two walking trails.

Commissioners Bob Archer and Kevin Cook gave thumbs-down to a partnership with the Kansas Turnpike Authority that would have connected the Deer Creek and Lake Shawnee trails.

For $560,000 from the county, the KTA would have included a 11-foot sidewalk as part of a plan to widen the Wittenberg Road bridge just north of the Lake Shawnee dam.

Thursday’s two to one vote could hurt the chances of getting a grant to connect the trails.

Commissioners also recognized Marilyn Nichols upon her retirement from the county.

Her last day as Register of Deeds is Friday.

She submitted her resignation in early May, citing family health issues as the reason for leaving.

Nichols was elected to her fifth term as in November.
