Video: Former mayor remembers ’66 tornado

1966 mayor

On June 8, 1966 a tornado cut a gash across the capital city killing 16 people and injuring hundreds.  The twister struck around dinner time on a Wednesday.

Now, on this 47th anniversary, the headlines and stories from 1966 aren’t so different from the kind we see and hear today. Bold type tells of horrifying destruction, death, a colossal clean up job, and neighbors helping neighbors.

The man who was mayor then, Chuck Wright, describes horror he saw and the goodness Topekans displayed in the aftermath.
