A neighbor who lives right downstairs from the crime scene says she heard the gunshots.

One floor below where a man was shot and killed on Thursday afternoon.
“She was doing laundry and i was going to the bathroom and and then all we heard was two knocks on the door, both the clicks and the gunshot and heard him fall right here.I jumped up and went outside and my grandma’s boyfriend he went up there just to check,” Hartzell said.
Hartzell say her neighbor and the victim, 24 year old Benjamin Jackson lived on the third floor with his mother.
“He’s a nice guy, he never bothered anybody. He took care of his kid and took care of his mom too,” Hartzell said.
Neighbors tell Kansas First News around 2:30 in the afternoon, they saw a man running out of the apartment.
One tenant says as that man was running out of the building he said, “you didn’t hear anything.”
Police say the weapon, a gun has not been found at the scene.
Investigators cannot say if this homicide is a random act or if it is gang or drug related.
“People need to be diligent. If they see someone who matches that description, what we would tell them to do is call the police department and make sure we’re aware…don’t try to apprehend them yourself,” Topeka Police Lt. Ron Gish said.
The suspect is described as a black man in his late teens or early 20′s, hair cut into a fade, about 5’6” wearing red shorts and no shirt.
He was last seen running from the scene and may be in a silver four door vehicle.
