There’s a new place for kids and the community – to have some fun this summer.
The Exoduster Family Activity Center in east Topeka is now open to the public.
The facility at the 805 southeast 12th Street includes an outdoor movie theater and a garden.
Organizers say the purpose is to teach kids life lessons, get them involved in the community and out of trouble.
“And we tell our kids in the program: that if you don’t learn how to play in the sun, work in the sun as a kid – you’re most likely won’t be able to do it as an adult. So, we’re trying to train them up early on how they should give back and work hard,” volunteer chairman Curtis Pitts said. “Because if we keep telling them they need to do the right thing, we also have to provide the good things for them to do. Otherwise, we are saying ‘go do good things’ and there is nothing good to do. So, we really have to reach out and get involved.”
So far, more than 100 kids and 50 volunteers give back at the facility.
Friday night, the public is invited to watch a movie at the outdoor theater.
It starts at 8:00pm and there will be a classic and a kids movie on the big screen.
