Asteroid fly-by

Harvest Moon

While you were sleeping a piece of space rock, about the size of a football field, whizzed by planet Earth!  Asteroid 2013 NE19 was discovered on July 15 and passed only 2.6 million miles from Earth.  This sounds like a far distance, but in space terms, it is relatively close (about 11 times the distance between Earth and the Moon).  There was no cause for alarm as scientist knew it would not hit our planet.  This asteroid highlights the fact that there are a lot space rocks in our solar system that must be watched and monitored.
