Topeka and Shawnee County are one step closer to a safer and more attractive riverfront.

The Riverfront Authority met yesterday morning to discuss the next steps moving forward with the project.

The group hired consultant Pat Downes in May.  He presented several issues that need to be addressed.  Of those issues, Downes says a main concern is making safety improvements to the wier, a low dam meant to raise water upstream.

Downes says although repairing the wier is a matter of public safety, it’s also an opportunity to create recreational use.
