Foundation underwrites NE Ohio museum programming

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — A foundation with ties to northeast Ohio will finance six exhibits over the next three years to attract more art museum visitors.

The $750,000 grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation was awarded last week to the Akron Art Museum.

The foundation backs programs in communities where the Knight brothers once owned newspapers, including Akron.

The first exhibit financed with the grant was organized by the Whitney Museum of American Art and runs through Nov. 3 in Akron. It includes works by 20th century American artists including Edward Hopper.

The foundation says the Akron exhibits will be accompanied by programming aimed at drawing new audiences into the museum. Community members will be invited to develop museum events and tours.
