Neighborhoods around Shawnee county are taking a stand against crime this weekend.
The National Night Out against crime was this evening. Government and police officials banded together to help make neighborhoods safer places to live. The National association for town watch sponsers the event and it’s in its 30th year.
Topeka Police Chief Ron Miller says, “”Last year, we were 8th in that group of 100 to 300 thousand, so we have improved, we are one of the larger programs in the country in cities of this category.”
Local resident Tony Sutton believes the event is important, “so that way they can be out in the neighborhood and get to know the neighbors and know that they can come down and trust the cops and everything else.”
This year A record number of 52 neighborhoods planned events for the night.
Officials made stops in 8 of those neighborhoods tonight
