At 3:43 a.m. Friday Topeka Police were called to the Regency Inn & Suites at 3802 SW Topeka Blvd. in reference to an aggravated burglary. When officers arrived they saw a man running into the woods behind the Regency.

According to police, a perimeter was quickly established, but due to the thickness of the woods, the TPD K-9 unit and the Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter were requested. After a brief search K-9 officers located the suspect hiding in a tree.

An hour later the suspect, 30-year old Kevin Wayne Smith of Topeka, came down from the tree and was booked in to the Department of Corrections for aggravated burglary, theft, criminal damage and felony obstruction.
