New leader emerges heading into Firekeeper Classic final round

Former UNLV golfer Kevin Penner grabbed a four-shot lead heading into the final round of the Firekeeper Classic.

“I felt really comfortable today,” Penner said. “I haven’t really felt that great with my swing the last few days and today on the range I just felt really good. I’ve been putting extremely well and my wedges have been good. Just having that confidence with my swing today let me free up a little bit and play loose golf.”

Penner made 7 birdies on Friday and recorded just one bogey. For the tournament, he’s made a total of 17 birdies.

“It’s always nice having a lead but there’s tons of people that can play out here and anyone within 3,4,5 shots even can catch me so if I don’t play good golf tomorrow I could easily lose it,” Penner said. “It’s nice having the lead but I just need to keep my head down and play exactly like I did today and try to pull off the win.”
