Washburn football team has watch party

You could hear plenty of cheers in Topeka during the Chiefs game.

The Washburn Ichabods gathered as a team to root on former Bod, Michael Wilhoite. He graduated from Washburn in 2010.

Washburn Head Coach Craig Schurig says his players use this as a teaching moment, and that with the right amount of determination, hard work, and perseverance, they too can earn a spot on an NFL roster.

“You realize how much work they put in,” Schurig said.  ”It makes it nice as a coach because then your present players and they see a guy who went through the same steps that they did.”

Wilhoite recorded three tackles and a pass break-up in the 49ers 15-13 win.

“And then there’s that goal that if they work hard enough and have the talent, they can achieve that level too and you don’t want to hold back those dreams.  He (Wilhoite) leads by example, just his work ethic and he’s just so humble. I mean, he doesn’t put any show on himself, it’s about the team, and that’s the way he was here.”
