Divers search Philippine ferry for 213 missing

CEBU, Philippines (AP) — The death toll could rise significantly as divers in the central Philippines make their way through a sunken ferry today to retrieve the bodies of more than 200 people missing after a collision with a cargo vessel.

Officials say at least 28 people are currently confirmed dead and hundreds of ferry passengers have been rescued.

The collision as the ferry entered the port of Cebu sent passengers jumping into the ocean while others were trapped.

The ferry carried 752 passengers, including children and infants, and 118 crew. The number is higher than the 841 earlier reported by the ferry owner

Accidents at sea are common in the Philippine archipelago because of frequent storms, badly maintained boats and weak enforcement of safety regulations.
