The Topeka Fire Department responded to 438 SE Gray St. in Topeka shortly after 3:15 this morning on the report of a house fire.
First on scene fire crews found heavy smoke and fire coming from the north side of the structure. Two adults and six children were able to escape the fire prior to the fire departments arrival.
Topeka Fire Department crews were able to make entry into the house and quickly extinguish the fire.
The Topeka Fire Department Investigation’s Unit responded to this incident to assist with determining the cause of the fire. The origin of the fire was located outside the house in the central air conditioning unit and the cause of this fire is being classified as accidental due to the failure of the air conditioning compressor located on the north side of the house.
The total dollar loss associated with this incident is estimated at $16,000, with $15,000 in structural damage, and $1,000 in content damage.
