Topeka, Kan. – The Kansas Creative Arts Industries commission today met via teleconference to discuss final grant applications and award grant dollars to the successful applicants. ARTSConnect is pleased to announce that our application was fully funded in the amount of $15,000. These dollars must be matched by other funding, but that funding has already been committed.

The Topeka Mural Project is a partnership between ARTSConnect, the Topeka Police Department, Safe Streets & Downtown Topeka, Inc.

“This project is a perfect example of collaboration between public and private entities which will result directly in safer and more beautiful neighborhoods in the short term – and a more economically robust city in the long term,” said ARTSConnect executive director Sarah Carkhuff Fizell. “This grant funding is critical to ensuring that the Topeka Mural Project touches all corners of our city. It is our hope that the entire community will embrace this project and that it can become an example of how the people in our city really can make a difference one brush stroke at a time.”

The first mural was painted in June at the intersection of Seward & Lake in Oakland. With the assistance of partners USD 501, NET Reach – High Crest West, and Community Resources Council, the Avondale East NET Reach Center (455 SE Golf Park Blvd) has been secured as the next location for a mural. Other sites are in the process of being secured.
“The Topeka Mural Project is an example of an innovative and creative solution to reducing crime and revitalizing neighborhoods,” said Lt. Joe Perry of the Topeka Police Department. “This grant ensures the long term success of the project and we are excited to watch neighbors become friends and our community become an even better place to live.”

If you are an artist interested in submitting artwork for the Avondale East NET Reach site or otherwise becoming involved in the project, please contact Sarah Fizell at the email address listed above. We hope to be able to offer microgrants to other organizations interested in creating murals in their neighborhoods, and an application process and more information will be forthcoming.

Although this project has now received this significant funding from the State of Kansas, this grant requires matching dollars. If you would like to contribute financially to the project, please contact Sarah Fizell at sarah@artsconnecttopeka.org or donate online at www.artsconnecttopeka.org. We will happily accept individual donations as well as corporate partnership. There are sponsorship and logo placement possibilities at each location. Other sponsoring partners currently include: The City of Topeka, Burlington Northern Santa Fe, Lowe’s, and Warehouse 414.
