The tradition at Holton is one of the most powerful in Kansas. The Wildcats claimed an undefeated state championship last season and are considered among the favorites for a repeat title in Class 4A.

“Our players always have confidence and I think that’s important,” Holton head coach Brooks Barta said. “A lot of them put in a great summer and are well prepared and they’re ready to get with it and play some football.”

The Wildcats steamrolled the competition during the regular season as the closest margin of victory was 27 points when Holton pitched a shutout against Hayden in district play.

“We’ve been ranked one a few years, and just because we’re ranked number one, we can’t just quit,” Holton senior running back/linebacker Drake Ewing said. “We have to have the determination to go back and do it again every single year.”

Holton returns several key pieces from last year’s title squad but the players know the challenge that lies ahead.

“We try to teach the younger guys just to come in here and be a leader and learn,” Holton senior running back/safety Brenden Hampton said. “Be intelligent as a football player and get better every day that you’re out here.”

Holton begins the 2013 campaign against DeSoto.

“We’re really a get better every day team,” Barta said. “And we want them to take every day with a leadership approach.  What we do on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday is what’s really important.”
