The Topeka High Trojans return with a new sense of attitude after finishing last season with one of the best records in school history.
“I think this group is a little more focused,” Topeka High head coach Walt Alexander said. “With the success last year that they want that kind of success again and they understand how hard you have to work to have that kind of success.”
The Trojans finished the 2012 campaign at (9-2). The season ended with a loss to Hutchinson in the Class 6A state quarterfinals.
“We’re about working hard every play,” Topeka High senior running back/linebacker Austin Tillman said. “Trying to make it to that next level and just building our program. Making great athletes and making great adults.”
Topeka High lost several athletes at key positions but still remain one of the top contenders in the area to get back to the postseason.
“The big thing is just building on last year,” Topeka High junior quarterback/safety Alec Beatty said. “We lost a close game to Hutch and it’s just building on last year and try to take that next step and make it to a state championship.”
Topeka High begins the season against Highland Park at Hummer Sports Park.
“They’re ready to step up and they’ve been waiting a long time for their turn,” Alexander said. “They’ve been really hungry and they’re going to play hard.”
