It’s tough for adults to get back in the swing of things after a long Labor Day Weekend, and it’s often even tougher for kids because it changes their school routine.
If you’re starting a new routine by going to school or daycare, then experts say you should practice that new routine several weeks before the big day, that way the child gets used to it. Also expect some tears.
Experts say it’s normal for children to cry or be scared in the beginning but that will change over time.
Kansas State University Professor of Family Studies Bronwyn Fees says to talk with your child about what to expect at this new place and spend some time with them at their new school or daycare to make them feel more comfortable.
“It is anxiety producing not only for the child but the parent most likely will have some anxiety too and it’s okay to recognize those but the child is going to take their cues from the parents,” says Bronwyn. “How they’re handling the transition will be important for the child to see, so if a parent is confident and has a smile on their face, it’s going to be a little easier.”
