Manhattan struggled to open the season last year but still managed to make the playoffs in Class 6A.

“We’re going to do our best every year to take it one game at a time,” Manhattan head coach Joe Schartz said. “Hopefully reach the ultimate goal of winning a state championship.”

The Indians are a perennial power in the Centennial League as they’ve been in the mix for a league and district championship the last few years.

“We’re going to have to come out every day and work hard and get better,” Manhattan senior offensive lineman Seth Eckels said. “Get good senior leadership and just keep working hard and keep our goals in mind.”

Manhattan begins the season on the road at Mill Valley.

“We are extremely small,” Schartz said. “We’re almost void of linemen and any type of size, so we’re going to have to go out there and win it on heart. But that’s what we hang our hat on around here in Manhattan is to play hard and play with a lot of heart.”
