Washburn football lost four games last season and three of them came at a crucial time for the Ichabods.
They lost the final three contests of the season against NW Missouri, Missouri Western and Emporia State.
Now, the Bods are ready to erase the bad taste of a disappointing finish.
“Our kids are excited,” Washburn head coach Craig Schurig said. “As coaches you’re always nervous about that first game. Not quite sure about some things but you’re excited to play.”
There’s also a new attitude with this year’s Ichabod squad.
“This year all around I think up front we’ve got a different mentality which is good,” Washburn junior offensive lineman Dylan Ready said. “We’re tougher, we’re stronger up front and I think it’s going to be a good year for us.”
Washburn returns several players that missed the majority of last season, including running back Sean McPherson who sat out in 2012 due to a knee injury.
“Be a family,” McPherson said. “Take care of each other. Stuff like that and that’s going to carry over onto the football field. Just handle business pretty much.”
“The whole defensive line I feel like we have a leader at every position,” Washburn senior defensive lineman Cameron Jackson said. “Defensive tackles and ends. We’ve got leaders everywhere.”
The Ichabods begin the 2013 campaign at Nebraska-Kearney on Thursday night.
“We feel like the majority of our team has played a number of games for us and they’re used to the MIAA style of play and we anticipate a really good game with Kearney,” Schurig said.
