The future of the community center is unknown.
Wednesday night, people came out to say what they wanted to happen to Juan “Poppy” Abbott Community Center in East Topeka.
On Sunday, it was shut down due to county budget cuts.
It was a place that offered dance classes, basketball, boxing for kids in the community and even church services.
County Commissioner for District 2, Kevin Cook says the county is looking at all options…but want to keep it community-driven. County officials say one option would be to find someone who would purchase the facility.
Comissioners say they hope the building doesn’t stay empty.
