Tuesday night members of the city council approved a zoning ordinance that would allow for the building of a much debated Walmart Superstore.
It was an 8 to 2 vote approving the fourth Walmart in Topeka.
Community members say it will be an economic boost to the east side of the city.
The vacant land near southeast 25th street and southeast California Avenue is the proposed location of the new store.
Construction of the retail store is expected to bring nearly 250 to 300 jobs to the surrounding community.
The 160 thousand square foot Walmart Superstore will include LED parking lot lighting, improved street light signals for pedestrians and a bus stop.
