Mail thefts continue to be a problem in Shawnee County, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Here are some tips to make sure you do not fall victim. Keep in mind, that thieves are alerted to your mailbox when the red flag is up. Pick up your mail promptly after delivery, don’t leave it in your mailbox overnight. Do not send cash and be cautious of checks in the mail. Tell your Post Office when you will be out of town, they can hold your mail until you return. Also, consider starting a neighborhood watch program to keep an eye on mailboxes.

“Thieves are looking for money. Cash and checks. But they’re also looking for personal information that they can use to steal your identity, social security numbers, phone numbers, addresses,” said Sgt. Todd Stallbaumer, with the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office.

Anyone who sees any suspicious behavior is asked to report it to the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office: (785) 251-2200.
