Union between MHK and Allegiant ends quickly

Manhattan Airport

Like a Hollywood marriage, the union between Manhattan Regional Airport and Allegiant Airlines ended quickly.

The Airline announced that February 23, 2014 will be the last day it flies out of MHK.

It was just last August when Allegiant announced it was coming to Kansas. The low-fare flights only went from Manhattan to Phoenix a couple days a week.

This news comes as crews are working on the first part of a major expansion at the airport. But Airport Director Peter Van Kuren says the departure doesn’t mean they will have to rethink designs.

“All of the growth expectations were based on the American Airlines service to DFW and ORD and so the fact that Allegiant is pulling out is going to have no impact on our terminal construction.”

Plans call for expanding the airport from having one gate to four.

Van Kuren says the first phase of the multimillion dollar project should be done by September.
