Shawnee County half-cent sales tax to help with projects

The Shawnee County Public Works Director made a pitch to continue a county-wide half-cent sales tax.

Tom Vlock voiced his support Monday at the County Commission meeting for extending the tax that finances infrastructure improvements and economic development.

He told commissioners that revenue from the tax has let the County carry out important projects such as replacing at least 70 aging bridges but there is still more work to be done.

Commissioners approved entering into contracts to provide design services for three projects that the tax finances.

The projects include replacing parts of two bridges over the Wakaroosa River and replacing a bridge over a tributary to the Kansas River on Urish Road.

The tax brings in about 14 million dollars every year including 5 million for economic development.
