The Kansas Turnpike Authority has announced two bridge repair and replacement  projects for Shawnee County.

Reconstruction of the Wittenberg Road Bridge and re-decking of the 29th Street bridge crossing over the Turnpike/I-470 near mile markers 180 and 181 in southeast Topeka are set to begin soon, weather permitting.

  • Wittenberg Road Bridge will close to all traffic on Monday, March 24th.
  • Work on the 29th Street Bridge will begin on Monday, March 31st. The 29th Street Bridge will remain open to traffic during construction.

The Wittenberg Road (Br. No. 181.190) and the 29th Street (Br. No. 180.510) Bridges have deteriorated to the point they need to be reconstructed. LG Barcus is the contractor for the project. Construction on both bridges are expected to be complete in November.

Most bridges crossing over the Turnpike are approximately the same age – 50+ years. During the next several years, KTA will be re-decking many of these bridges. Future bridge re-decking schedule will be determined by annual bridge inspections.
