One dead, two kids taken to hospital in crash

On Monday at approximately 6:53 p.m., the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a report of a one-vehicle crash in the 3600 block of NW Rochester Rd.

According to the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office, a 1997, Honda Accord 4-door, driven by Brian Lee Riley, 33 years of age, of Topeka, was traveling northbound on NW Rochester Rd. when it left the roadway, struck a driveway culvert in the east ditch, rolled over, then came to rest in the east ditch.

A Deputy arrived just minutes after the call was dispatched and found two children still inside the vehicle. The Deputy immediately performed CPR on a one-year old girl, Kylynn Gunter, who was taken to Stormont –Vail by AMR with life-threatening injuries. The child was later flown to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City and is in critical condition.

Twelve year old Loren Gunter of Topeka was riding in the front passenger seat of the vehicle. He sustained non-life threatening injuries and was taken to Stormont-Vail by AMR.

The driver, Brian L. Riley was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Preliminary investigation at the scene indicated the only occupant that was restrained in the vehicle, at the time of the crash, was the one-year old girl. It is unknown at this time if the child safety seat, which the girl was riding in, was properly installed in the vehicle.

Soldier Township Fire Department, AMR, and the Topeka Police Department’s Accident Reconstruction Team responded to the incident.
