ESU Lady Hornets cruise in NCAA Tournament opener

March 14, 2014-The Lady Hornets erupted for 97 points in a 32 point win over Southwestern Oklahoma State in the opening round of the NCAA Central Regional Tournament in Searcy, Ark.  The 97 points are the most by Emporia State in an NCAA Tournament game since a 97-94 overtime win against Gannon in the national semifinals in 2010.

The Lady Hornets jumped out to an 18-4 lead to open the game.  The Bulldogs did not break double figures until the 10:08 mark of the opening frame with Emporia State leading 30-10.  The Lady Hornets took a 55-28 lead into the locker rooms.  The 55 points were the most scored in an opening frame by Emporia State this year.

Merissa Quick scored the first points of the second half before SWOSU went on a 20-2 to cut the lead to 11 with 13:48 left in the game.  Amber Vandiver scored an old fashioned three-point play to break the run and Laura Patrick scored the next four points to give the Lady Hornets a 66-48 lead with 11:27 remaining.  Patrick then scored eight points in a 12-0 run to push the lead up to 29 points with 8:26 left and the Lady Hornets cruised to the final 32 point victory.

Patrick had 27 points and hit five three-pointers to lead three Lady Hornets in double figures.  Quick had a double double with 17 points and 11 rebounds with three blocks and three assists.

The Lady Hornets will play the winner of the game between Wayne State and Pittsburg State.  The semifinal is set to tip at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday at Rhodes Field House in Searcy, Ark.

CAREER & SINGLE SEASON NOTES:
Quick passed former United States Olympian Pat Roberts for 23rd on the Lady Hornets all-time scoring list with 1,114 points.
Patrick had five three pointers to pass Andrea Leiker for fifth on the Lady Hornets all-time list with 169 made threes.
Rheanna Egli hit a three-pointer to tie Jamie Blakely for 10th on the Lady Hornets al-time list with 123 made threes.
Quick had three blocks to become just the third Lady Hornet with 200 career blocked shots.
Patrick passed herself for fourth on the single season made three-pointer list with 87 made threes this year.
Quick had three blocks to tie Alli Volkens for third on the Lady Hornets single season blocked shot list with 84.
Kelly Moten scored nine points to pass Rheanna Egli, Tara Holloway and Stephanie Riles for 11th on the Lady Hornets all-time freshman scoring list with 252 points.
The 29 wins are tied for the fourth most in school history.
