Bill will require all teachers to be fingerprinted

Thousands of teachers are currently employed in Kansas Public Schools but most haven’t had a background check.

The Kansas Senate has approved a bill that will change that.

Bill 335 will require all teachers to be fingerprinted when they renew their certificates.

Teachers already have to submit fingerprints and undergo a background check when they first apply for a Kansas certificate but teachers hired before 2002 did not have the same requirement.

Senate officials say the bill is necessary for the safety of students.
