KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City police say a minivan struck two children riding a skateboard, killing one of the children and injuring the other.

The Kansas City Star reports (http://bit.ly/1dnyGWp ) the accident occurred Saturday evening outside an apartment. Police say the minivan driver was headed west when the two children came down a hill on the skateboard.

Sgt. Bill Mahoney says the driver stopped but not in time. He says 9-year-old Jordan Hale was killed in the accident, and a 6-year-old boy on the skateboard was severely injured. Mahoney says the 6-year-old boy, who was not identified, was in serious condition Sunday.

He says the boys are believed to be from the area.

Police are investigating to determine if speed was a factor in the accident.
