2 workers killed in collapse of communication tower identified

The victims in Tuesday’s tower collapse in Pottawatomie County have been identified as 38-year-old Martin Powers of St. Charles Mo. and 25-year-old Seth Garner of St. Peters, Mo.

On Tuesday, just after 9:30 a.m. the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office received a call that a communication tower had collapsed.

The location of the tower was reported to be at Highway 16 and Rock Creek Rd. near Blaine Kan.   Sheriff’s Deputies, EMS,  Fire / Rescue, Kansas Department of Transportation and Kansas Highway Patrol responded to the scene.

Emergency personnel said one of the towers was recently built and the other was an older structure that was being dismantled by the two workers who died.

Powers was pronounced dead at the scene, and Garner was transported to a local hospital where he also passed away.    The workers had been at the site and were in the process of dismantling the older tower.  Both workers were reported to be at a height greater than 250 feet when the towers collapsed.

The two workers on the ground were unhurt.

Blaine is located about 50 miles Northwest of Topeka.
