Emporia State avoids sweep, beats Washburn

The Hornets got 7.0 innings from starter Dakota McKaskle and Price Jacobs went five for five as Emporia State defeated Washburn 5-3 in the final game of the Turnpike Tussle weekend series.

Washburn scored a run in the bottom of the first and loaded the bases with one out but McKaskle was able to work out of the jam and allow just one run. Jacobs would tie it when he scored on a single from Jordan Hodges, who came around to score on a double from Wade Hanna for a 2-1 Hornet lead.

The Ichabods tied the score with a single run in the bottom of the second, but the Hornets responded with two of their own in the top of the third to take the lead for good. Justin Harris walked and scored on Dean Long’s double for the first run and Jacobs then drove in Long with a single. Emporia State added an insurance run in the fifth when Aaron Gile tripled and then cam home a single from Hanna.

McKaskle went 7.0 innings, giving up two runs on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Brenton Higgins worked the final 2.0 innings for his seventh save of the year.  After allowing a run and letting Washburn load the bases in the eighth, Higgins got two of his five strikeouts to end the threat.

Emporia State, now 20-14 on the season and 15-13 in the MIAA, will travel to Warrensburg, Mo. on Tuesday for a non-conference game against #26 Central Missouri.  The Hornets defeated the Mules 4-3 last Tuesday in Emporia.
