HOYT, Kan. (KSNT) – Two area fire fighters were injured Thursday morning after a tire they were replacing exploded.

Jackson County Sheriff Tim Morse says that the two Hoyt volunteer firemen were taken to a Topeka hospital and are believed to be in stable condition.

The two were replacing a tire on an older model tanker truck when it exploded.

It’s not clear why one of the inner tires exploded, but it knocked the outer tire off the hub and into the two men.

“They were able to tell us what they kind of remember,” says Hoyt Fire Department Chief Edward Kester. “Up until before they heard the pop and that was the last thing they kind of remember and then they kind of came around.”

One of the firemen was knocked unconscious.

Kester says both men are alert and in good spirits in the hospital. Others at the fire station heard the explosion and called for help.
