The City of Topeka Fire Department responded to a reported house fire at 6215 SW 24th Terrace shortly before noon on Tuesday.
A news release from the Topeka Fire Department says two citizens who were on their way home noticed the fire contacted 911 and attempted to extinguish the fire with the garden hose and were unable to extinguish the fire due to its size. Fire officials say however that their actions did help limit the overall damage.
Upon arrival fire crews found heavy smoke and fire coming from the rear of the house. Both primary and secondary searches of the house found no one inside. The fire was quickly extinguished.
The City of Topeka Fire Department Investigations Unit responded to the scene and conducted an origin and cause investigation. They say the origin of the fire was a shelf on the rear of the house and the cause of the fire is accidental related with the careless discarding of smoking materials.
The total estimated damages are 120 thousand dollars with 100 thousand dollars in damage to the structure and 20 thousand dollars to contents.
