Officers looking for drivers not wearing seat belts

More officers will be on the road looking for drivers not wearing their seat belts.

The Kansas Department of Transportation made the announcement in Shawnee.

20-year-old Shelby Feugate spoke at the event. Two years ago she was in a crash. Feugate was not wearing a seat belt and she says that cost her the use of her legs.

“I didn’t think it was going to happen to me, I used to sit through assemblies in high school thinking like you know this is important and you know this is sad but I don’t have to worry about that because that’s not going to happen to me.”

K-DOT says Kansans fall below the national average in seat belt use.

They say the sunflower state ranks 39th among the 50 states.
