LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office say a man is recovering in a hospital after being shot while driving on a highway south of Lawrence.

The shooting occurred late Monday on Highway 59. The sheriff’s office says the 24-year-old man was taken to a Topeka hospital after being shot late Monday.

Officers closed a three-mile section of the highway for several hours Tuesday to search for clues.

Sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Steve Lewis said authorities have no information on a suspect or a vehicle.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office are conducting a shooting investigation of a three mile area of Southbound US Hwy. 59 south of Lawrence.

According to a release on Tuesday, the road will be closed to southbound travel from N 1000 road to the N 650 exit for several hours and rerouted to old 59 highway.

Deputies are searching the area for evidence relating to a shooting that happened Monday night on the highway.

At about 11:00 PM Monday night the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call that an individual had been shot while driving in that area. A 24-year-old Lawrence resident had sustained gunshot wounds and was taken by helicopter to Stormont Vail hospital where they are recuperating.

At this time police have no information about any suspects or vehicle involved in the shooting.
