Authorities investigating hanging dummy in mask

GRAIN VALLEY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City area authorities are investigating after a life-size dummy with a President Obama mask was found hanging from an interstate bridge.

Jackson County Sheriff spokeswoman Sgt. Ronda Montgomery says authorities were notified early Monday by several motorists who saw the dummy with the Obama mask hanging from a bridge over U.S. Interstate 70 near Grain Valley, which is about 20 miles east of Kansas City.

Montgomery says authorities closed the highway in the area for a few minutes to remove the dummy. She says authorities also found an item attached to the dummy that prompted them to call an area bomb and arson squad, but no explosives were found on the dummy.

Montgomery says the department is working with federal authorities in the investigation.

Parts of Interstate 70 in Missouri between Grain Valley and Oak Grove was shutdown by authorities late Monday morning while police removed a fully-clothed mannequin wearing a mask of President Barack Obama that was left hanging from a bridge overpass.

The Kansas City Star reports (http://bit.ly/1jMCzAP) the incident happened about 5:30 a.m. at the bridge on Lefholz Road. Deputies noticed what they believed to be an explosive device attached to the mannequin while removing it from the overpass.

A bomb unit was summoned and as a precaution all lanes of I-70 were shut down, no explosives were found.

Police are investigating who placed the mannequin on the bridge and it is not known how long it had been there.
