BEACHWOOD, Ohio (AP) — A northeast Ohio girl’s death from brain cancer last week was marked by a sweeping campaign to “paint the web purple.”
The Plain Dealer of Cleveland reports (http://bit.ly/1vgpl7D) friends launched the charitable effort after Rebecca Alison Meyer died on her sixth birthday June 7. It celebrated the girl “by calling the Internet’s attention to her.”
The campaign turned Internet text, avatars and backgrounds purple and had the hashtag #663399Becca trending on Twitter. In the language of web design, #663399 means purple, Rebecca’s favorite color.
Meyer’s father, Eric, and mother, Kat, wrote a popular blog chronicling Rebecca’s illness. The newspaper reports Eric Meyer is a prominent web designer and author.
The “paint the web purple” campaign nearly tripled its fundraising goal of $5,000 for St. Baldrick’s Foundation and pediatric cancer research.
