Emporia man killed in police chase

EMPORIA,Kan. (KSNT) - An Emporia man is dead after crashing his car into a power pole while fleeing from police officers early Sunday morning. At about 2:30 Sunday morning. Officers were trying to pull over a driver who failed to stop at a stop sign at 9th and Commercial Street in Emporia, when the driver began to flee.

“The car came from here, it looked like it was going to turn but it thought that it would crash or something. So it kept going straight and then it lost control and flipped,” said Paola Berlera, who lives nearby.

Just five blocks away, neighbors near 9th and Cottonwood were shocked when they heard tires screeching as the car crashed.

“I was really scared,” said Berlera.

The driver, 20-year-old Javier Escobedo was trying to elude those officers, when he lost control of the 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier, he was driving and slammed into a power pole.

“It was a horrible thing. A horrible accident,” said Ben Schubert, who lives nearby.

Escobedo was not wearing a seat belt when he crashed.

“That vehicle was just bent like a taco,” said Schubert.

Escobedo was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at about 3:15 Sunday morning. The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash.
