Media gets first look at Topeka tiger cubs

TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) The Topeka Zoo’s newest members are coming along nicely and growing fast.

ON Thursday morning, members of the media had their first look at the three, female Sumatran tiger cubs.

The three cubs were born on May 4, 2014. Zoo staff weighed each cub and all are now weighing at just more than 13 pounds each.

The cubs’ mother, Jingga, is doing her best to care for the cubs and Topeka Zoo Director Brendan Wiley calls her the “perfect mother”.

Wiley said the three are progressing well but there was some concern early on for one of the cubs.

“Cub number 1 was the runt of the litter and was the one that if we had not intervened, probably would not have survived; today, said Wiley.”  “Cub number 1 is the largest of the three, all of them are doing great, all over 13 lbs and growing at a trend line that is dead on perfect.”

Wilely says there are about only 400 tigers like these left in the world and he expected these cubs to stay at the zoo for anywhere from two to five years.

The cubs are still on track to make their debut to the public around the first week of August.
