USSSA softball world series underway in Topeka

TOPEKA, Kan. – One of the largest youth tournaments began in Topeka. The USSSA Softball Fastpitch World Series takes over Lake Shawnee.

Bettis Family Sports Complex converted its baseball diamonds into a softball facility for the weekend.

“It’s been pretty awesome so far,” Tournament director Dustin True said. “Yesterday (Wednesday) was pretty hectic with opening ceremonies but that’s what makes and breaks this tournament. I think it went off without a hitch, everything was great. Today, so far it’s going well, everything is going smooth.”

14, 16 and 18-year-old teams from all over the Midwest join in on the action as more than 900 players will hit the field for the three-day tournament.

“These girls are having the time of their life and that’s all you can ask for,” True said. “Most of these girls have never played on turf before so there’s a lot of excitement.”

Pool play began on Thursday, then it’s on to bracket play to determine a USSSA World Series champion for the different age groups.
