Talking to your kids about Drugs and Alcohol

Talking to your kids about drugs and alcohol is never easy, but it is possible.

Safe Streets has launched a meme generator to help get the conversation rolling.

“I mean all you can do is hope for the best, hope that even if they’re curious, they aren’t curious enough to try it,” parent Elise Barlet.

However, experts say there is something you can do, talk to your kids.

But how do approach them about drugs and alcohol?

Safe Streets’ new meme generator is a new hi-tech way to start the conversation.

“You know it’s a more fun, more modern way to address the subject of underage drinking,” Director of Safe Streets Kristi Pankratz said.

It’s easy to use and there are only four steps. First you choose your avatar, then one for your child, next you pick a location and finally you decide what to say.

What you do with the final image is up to you. You can share it on Facebook, send it through a text and even use it as a screen saver.

Kids in Shawnee County are around 11 years old when they start trying substances, right around the start of middle school.

So when should parents start having conversations with their kids about drugs and alcohol?

Safe Streets suggest as young as 9 and 10 years old.

Not only can parents use the meme generator, so can teachers and other community members who work with or mentor children.

“We would hope to see these messages going throughout different avenues in the community,” Pankratz said.
