Nationally recognized all-breed dog show coming to Topeka

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Starting tomorrow, the Kansas Expocentre will host a series of dog shows during the Capital City Classic, August 14-18 and August 20-24.

The nearly two-week long event includes two toy dog  group shows; eight all breed shows; seven  specialty shows, featuring Great Danes, Siberian Huskies, German Shepherds, Boxers, Saint Bernard’s, Chinese Shar Pei  and Doberman Pinschers and four all-breed obedience and rally trials.

Approximately 1,200 to 1,400 dogs will compete each day. These shows have traditionally drawn some of the best and most well-known dogs from all over the United States and Canada. The economic impact of this event to the Topeka community is approximately $1.2 million.

The public is encouraged and welcome to attend all events, exhibits and shows of this prestigious dog show.  For anyone who loves dogs, this is a rare chance to see many of the dogs only seen on TV right here in Topeka. The all-breed shows begin about 8:00 a.m. each morning with breed judging. Group judging begins about 2:30 p.m. daily, culminating with Best in Show about 4:30 p.m. Rally and obedience events will be held August 21-24 at the Agricultural Hall. Admission to the dog shows and parking are free at the Expocentre.

“We are excited to be the hosts for the Capital City Classic dog shows,” said Terry Cook, president and CEO of Visit Topeka, Inc. “This is an amazing weeklong event and one of the best organized among the dog show circuits. Topeka is honored to be the host city once again.”

The Capital City Classic Dog Shows is sponsored by the Topeka Kennel Club, the Manhattan Kansas Kennel Club, the Jesse James Kennel Club and the Greater Emporia Kennel Club, along with the participating group and specialty clubs.

A dog may be entered one or more times in different events. For each of those events, the dog will be judged by an internationally-recognized and licensed American Kennel Club judge. In addition, there will be several different dog-related vendors on the show grounds selling dog supplies, conducting seminars, selling a variety of merchandise and offering dog-related services.
