TOPEKA (KSNT) – The City of Topeka announced Thursday that through the rest of the year, patrons to the downtown area can find some free parking.

The city is trying to off-set criticism from downtown businesses that not enough is being done while much of Kansas Avenue is torn up for re-construction over the next 18-months.

On Tuesday, Kansas First News reported on the latest business to close on the Avenue citing the loss of business due to the construction.

The city says that starting immediately, people can find free parking on the side streets east of Kansas Avenue.

That includes all metered parking spots on 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th Streets from Kansas Avenue to Quincy.

The program will run through the end of the year until construction shifts to the other side of the street. At that time the same streets one-block west of Kansas Avenue will be free. through 2015.
