Emporia State football prepares for 2014 season

EMPORIA (KSNT) – This football season, the Emporia State Hornets are looking to make another trip to the Division II playoffs. Last season, the Hornets finished with a 9-2 record, which included their loss to Minnesota-Duluth in the opening round of the post-season.

The foundation is there for ESU to make some noise once again in the MIAA. Seven starters are returning on defense, and the offense will welcome ten guys back, including All-Conference quarterback, junior Brent Wilson.

“We have to be mentally ready to go to practice each and every day. Winning is hard,” said Emporia State head coach Garin Higgins. “Winning a championship is hard. You have to do things different than everybody else.”

“I feel like the experience we got last year is really going to help us because we can show the young freshman just how to grow up, and just handle adversity whenever you got to do it, said junior wide receiver Kavaski Ervin.

“For the last few years, we’ve done a little bit better, and little bit better, and last year we got to the playoffs,” said senior wide receiver Austin Willis. “We said all the time, brick by brick we’re not done. Well last year, that was just us building one more brick onto that house. And we want to keep building toward that MIAA championship, and eventually a national championship.”

“Our mind set right now is just going each and every day at practice to get better and not be complacent at where we’re at,” said junior quarterback Brent Wilson. “I know the guys are excited about that first game, and they’re excited about getting better each and every day, whether that’s in the film room, in the weight room, and on the field.”

The Hornets kickoff their 2014 campaign with a home game on Thursday September 4 at 7:00pm against Missouri Southern.
