Washburn University given extension on federal probe

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Kansas Frist News has learned officials at Washburn University have been given until the end of August to supply information to investigators from the U.S. Department of Education.

The Department’s Office of Civil Rights (OCR) notified the university July 1st it had been added to a national list of colleges and universities under federal investigation for the way the handle sexual assault complaints on campus.

Two incidents from early 2014 were brought to the OCR’s attention and the university was told to supply it’s policies and documentation on its handling of the complaints by July 31st.

Shortly after, the university asked for an extension of the initial deadline stating the OCR had requested too much documentation for such a short turnaround. OCR has now given Washburn until August 29th to submit the information.

Throughout, university administrators have maintained they stand behind their policies and the handling of the two initial complaints. They have told Kansas First News previously they are working cooperatively with federal investigators.

Since Washburn was added to the list, the University of Kansas in Lawrence has also been added to that list of schools and universities under investigation.
